- ➤ Officer Phillip Wagner died on July 24 in an ambush that also injured his partners Peter Gale and Brent Payne, leaving his family in need of support. Community members continue to honor his memory by paying respects at the Lorain Police Memorial and donating to the Lorain Police Officers’ Charitable Foundation + by backing local fundraising events. - ➤ A 32-year-old Amherst man was taken into custody Wednesday after Lorain County Sheriff's Department pursued his stolen black Nissan sedan on I-90, leading to a Westlake standoff where he refused to exit his car and held a cordless drill wrapped in a towel as a fake firearm + SWAT and a K9 unit were deployed to end the standoff with minimal injury while he was transported to UH St. John Medical Center. - ➤ A fundraiser held Wednesday at Rookies Sports Bar and Grill in Parma Heights gathered about 100 people riding motorcycles and in Jeeps to support three Lorain police officers attacked with a high-powered rifle. Officer Phillip Wagner died today at MetroHealth while officers Brent Payne and Peter Gale are recovering, and the money raised through donations, an auction & 50/50 raffle will be split evenly among the families. - ➤ Thousands of police officers, family and community members gathered at Rocket Arena yesterday for the funeral of fallen Lorain officer Phillip Wagner, who died from injuries sustained in an ambush while on duty. The service began at 11 a.m. with a 7:30 a.m. procession and ended with a private burial at York Chapel—memorial donations were requested instead of flowers. Cleveland 19 News
